Merit Partners Biographies for Fall 2014

Jony Luna, Team Leader

Jonathan Luna and is a 4th year mechanical engineer. He chose Merit Partner’s because the program sounded very interesting and was also a great opportunity for him to gain some more leadership experience. Jonathan’s technical skill set consists of a good foundation of mathematics, basic coding, and Microsoft office suit. Also, Jonathan is bilingual and has good communication skills, able to provide clear and concise instructions.

Aloura Alcantara, Deputy Leader

Aloura Alcantar is currently a third year Sociology major at UC Merced. She was born along a Route 66 in Barstow,Ca. Through this course she would like to learn more about the Central Valley’s prison system. She would also like to see what improvements could be made in the Central Valley to prevent people from going and/or returning to prison. Some fun facts about her include a love for baking, reading, and knitting.

Victor Cardoza, Intellectual Property Officer

Victor Eduardo Cardoza is currently a 2nd year, majoring in Biology at UC Merced. He was born in El Salvador, a small country in Central America, but for the past 16 years he has lived in the city of Los Angeles, California. From this course he hopes to gain new skills and to also improve on his old skills. He would also love to gain hands-on and teamwork experience. A few things he enjoys doing on his spare time are reading fiction novels, he enjoys being active in his community through clubs and organizations, and to go out and explore places with friends. 

Rocia Reveles

Rocio E. Reveles is a third year at UC Merced as a Sociology major and a Cognitive Science minor. The goal that she would like to accomplish through the Merit Partner course is to simply gain experience and practice in the career she would like to pursue by working with people whom had the similar interests with Merit Partners. Working as part of this project, she will also contribute ideas, dedication, and expertise to the design process and execution of the project.

Rachel Ongpin

Rachel Ibarra Ongpin is currently a second year Sociology major. From taking this course, she hopes to gain more experience working in a group team and in a field relating to her major. Rachel also hopes to gain more skills that will help her prepare for her career choices after college. She will contribute to the team by utilizing her communication skills and offering her time and dedication into this project. A few things Rachel likes to do on her own time is read, travel, write, run, do yoga, and work within the community. 

Michelle Acosta Espinosa

Michelle Acosta Espinosa has just begun her second year as a political science major. She is from a growing town called Palmdale, CA. Some skills that she would like to improve throughout this course are her research and communication skills. She will contribute to the team by being a supportive and reliable team member and the communications officer. A fun fact about her is that she is very curious and questions everything. 

Stephen Huang

Stephen Huang is a Senior at UC Merced pursuing a degree in computer science and engineering.  Excited to part of the eMerit engineering service learning team, Stephen hopes to learn how to apply his engineering skills to solve real world problems.  He brings his knowledge of computers and past leadership experience to the table, and aims to be a productive and contributing team member.  On his spare time he enjoys dancing and playing with yo-yos.

Mark Renzo Santiago

Mark Renzo Santiago is a sophomore at UC Merced pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Engineering. This is Mark’s first time working in an engineering environment, and he hopes to gain experience in collaborating with a group of like-minded students from diverse education backgrounds. Mark has experience in computer programming languages including: HTML, Java, Python, and C++. He hopes to contribute his computer skills as well as provide assistance to the team in any way he can. Mark is an avid dancer and tennis player; he is currently the dance branch ambassador of the Hip Hop Movement club.        

Shon Shabari

Shon is a fifth year student double majoring in Computer Science Engineering and Literatures and Cultures. He grew up in Delhi, California located in the San Joaquin Valley and hopes to contribute to his valley community through his work with Merit Partners. He enjoys collaborating in groups and anticipates that his experience with the project will further enrich his teamwork abilities. Since he has a varied background ranging from the humanities to the STEM fields, he carries a unique skillset that enables him to be a versatile team member.
