ESW Biographies for Fall 2016

Michael Avugwi - Project Manager

Michael is a third year Mechanical Engineering student. Avugwi is the project manager of the Engineering Service Learning Team Engineering Service Learning Team, ESW (Engineers for a Sustainable World). He chose it because it was an opportunity to learn about sustainability and leadership skills. Academically, Avugwi is interested in creating a sustainable world by using nature as a model. Avugwi has been working in a research lab here on campus with Professor Martini on Tribology. He also enjoys spending time building leaning new advancements in science and engineering. His dream is to one-day work with Boeing.

Joel Correa - Assistant Project Manager

Joel Correa is a first year Mechanical Engineering student. He is the assistant project manager for the Engineering Learning Service team, Engineers for a Sustainable World. He chose to take part in this project because he has always been interested sustainability. Correa hopes that this experience will make him a better leader and the face of a sustainability evolution. In high school, Correa was in charge of a social action project which addressed the high quantity of air pollution around his community. Correa enjoys riding bikes and hiking where he can enjoy the beauty of nature.

Adolfo Duran - Communications Officer

Adolfo Duran is a fifth year Mechanical Engineering student. Duran is the Communications officer for the Engineer’s for a Sustainable World group. He chose the project so that he could be more involved with sustainability and discovering means of getting the community involved to help with making the University of California, Merced a more sustainable campus. Duran hope to attain an internship in the spring of 2017 before graduating and planning to go into the industry. Duran enjoys going to amusement parks and he also enjoys going sightseeing and enjoying what nature has to offer.

Jovani Perez - Intellectual Property Officer

Jovani Perez is a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student. Perez is currently the Intellectual Property Officer for the Engineers for a Sustainable World group for the Fall 2016 Engineering Service course. Perez chose this group because he believed in the idea of making the UC Merced campus one of the most of sustainable campuses there has ever been. Academically, he recently interned within the assembly district office of assembly member Miguel Santiago who represents a portion of the downtown district of Los Angeles in Southern California. His number one motivation for pursuing his engineering degree is his family and looks forward to making them proud at graduation.

William Reyes - Procurement and Finance Officer

William Reyes is a fifth year student pursuing his degree in Mechanical engineering. He is the procurement and finance officer of the engineering service team, ESW (Engineers for a sustainable World) lab. Since he was a child, Reyes always hoped to reinforce sustainability sometime in his career by working on a project. Through his time as an officer, William plans to use his skills utilized from engineering service learning in the hope to work in a lab focused on testing energy efficient alternatives. He enjoys playing video games, reading and spending with family and friends on his spare time.

Samantha Young - Team Lead

Samantha Young is a second year Environmental Engineering student. Young is the Team Lead for the project group Engineers for a Sustainable World, and has previously worked on the Vernal Pools Reserves Team as well. She chose ESW this year because it coincides with her major well and wanted to get experience with a project that revolves around sustainability and design of a self-sufficient garden on campus. In school, she is interested in chemistry, and its applications towards environmental health, such as biogeochemistry. She is passionate about odd things, such as soil, ocean health, and backpacking; often referred to as a “tree-hugger”, you could say that she loves nature and all things outdoorsy.

Tiffany Tang - Team Lead

Tiffany Tang is a third year Biomedical Engineering student. Tang is the Sub Team Leader for the Engineering Service Learning team, Engineers for a Sustainable World. She chose to take part in Engineers for a Sustainable World because it gave her an opportunity to be a part of the Engineering Service Learning Team that was involved with the environment. Academically, Tang is interested in creating different projects and has been a part of Engineering Service Learning for five semesters. Tang has joined the team Engineers for a Sustainable World because she wanted to be a part of a great opportunity of experiencing a hand on environmental friendly engineering project. She also loves to play basketball and her favorite basketball team are the Golden State Warriors.

Steven Ng - Team Member

Steven Ng is a fourth year Computer Science major at the University of California, Merced. Ng is a member of the Engineers for Sustainability lab, an Engineering Service Learning team. Ng plans to use his internship experiences he has held in the past to help provide the team with technical support. He joined the team because he has never worked with a sustainability program with before and would like to add it to his list of experiences. In his spare time, Steven tends to stay inside and play video games as well as watch shows to relax.

Brandon McFarland - Team Member

Brandon McFarland is a fifth year majoring in Earth System Science. He comes from a small town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. McFarland is a team member for the Engineering Service Learning team Engineer for Sustainable World. It was important for him to be a part of this team because he wants to be an advocate for reducing the human carbon footprint. McFarland wants to continue his studies in law school and work with environmental law in order to establish new environmental policies. He likes to spend his free time with experimental cooking.

Aide Villegas - Team Member

Aide Villegas is a third year student pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Earth System Sciences. She is a team member for the Engineering Service Learning team, ESW (Engineer for Sustainable World) Lab. Villegas has always had an interest in minimizing humans print on Earth and hopes to have a career that promotes green living for future generations. Through hands-on experience, she hopes to refine her skills of team work and as an engaging team member to contribute to the project that make a difference. Villegas enjoys making her family and friends proud of her accomplishments as well as making a change.

Jose Robles - Team Member

Jose Robles is a junior level transfer student pursuing a Bachelor degree in Materials Science and Engineering emphasizing in Nanotechnology. Robles is a member of the Engineering Service Learning team, ESW (Engineering for a Sustainable World). Robles has a strong passion for sustainability and hopes to build a startup that focuses on making the world a better and greener place. By joining the ESW team, Robles hopes to acquire valuable skills through hands-on experience in the sustainable garden project. Robles enjoys being outdoors and he also loves to take part in the occasional movie night.

Anthony Robledo - Team Member

Anthony Robledo is a first year Mechanical Engineering student. Robledo is a part of (ESW) Engineers for a Sustainable World, an Engineering Service Learning team. Robledo is only the second person in his family to go to college, and is the first to attend a University of California. He chose this team because, he wishes to make a difference in people’s lives but as well as to change the world with the work that can be done through the program. Robledo has been an active member of his community through volunteering and politics to change the lives around him.

Stephanie Mose - Team Member

Stephanie Mose is a fourth year student pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Material Science and Engineering. Mose is a member of the Engineering Service Learning team, ESW (Engineers for a Sustainable World). She joined the team because she saw it as an opportunity to promote projects that are green, and also form stronger bonds with the local community. Mose has developed a strong background in collaborative work through her experiences with volunteering at various on-campus events and community projects back home. She enjoys learning how to play various instruments and reading art books during her free time.

Lionel Millan - Team Member

Lionel Millan is a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student. Millan is a team member of the Engineering Service Learning team Engineers for a Sustainable World. He choose it because it gave him an opportunity to learn more about sustainability and how it can help in his day to day life. As well, sustainability interests Millan with respect to helping reduce the carbon footprint of the University of California Merced. Academically, Millan is interested in Computer Aided Design and Aerospace engineering. Outside of class he enjoys hanging out with his friends, as well as playing basketball.

Luis Cardenas - Team Member

Luis Cardenas is a first year Mechanical Engineering student. He is a team member of the Engineering Service Learning team Engineers for a Sustainable World. He chose ESW this year get experience working on a year round project that both coincides with my major and will create a sustainable environment for the community. In addition, this course interests Cardenas to help design a modern layout for a garden that will house and contain the plants needed for the garden. he is interested in Robotics and Aerospace Engineering. Some hobbies he takes time in are playing soccer and practicing drum set.
