Merced County Rescue Mission Biographies for Fall 2016

Roman Giglio – Project Manager

Roman Giglio is a first year Material Science and Engineering student with an emphasis in Nanotechnology. Giglio is the project manager for the Engineering Service Learning Food Oasis. He chose to be a part of this program so he can make a great contribution to communities by making a small, manmade ecosystem that will create a clean source of fresh produce and fish. Through working as Project Manager, he plans to get the experience to manage an engineering team and eventually a firm in the future. Roman spends most of his time playing guitar and studying with friends.

Sofia Pino - Assistant Project Manager

Sofia Pino is a second year Human Biology student. Pino is the assistant project manager of the Engineering Service Learning Team, Food Oasis. She chose to join this project because of her interests in aquaponics gardening and the desire to help the community in Merced County. Academically, Sofia is interested in biotechnology and hopes to join a master’s program in the subject after gaining her B.S. in Biology. Pino has three certifications in biotechnology and is published in the NCBI database for her work in bioinformatics with Rutgers’s University and the study of Duckweed DNA.

Alfredo Vasquez Gomez – Communication Officer

Alfredo Vasquez Gomez is a 3rd year student pursuing his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Physics. Vasquez-Gomez is the communications officer for the Engineering Service Learning Team Food Oasis. He chose the Food Oasis team because he saw the opportunity to lay down a foundation to this brand new project. His goal is to assist in the development of an Aquaponics system that will help feed the people in need. He plays the guitar in his church’s worship band and shows his care for the community by hosting his own bible studies at home which helps the young struggling teens.

Angel Louis-Coles – Intellectual Property Officer

Angel Louis-Coles is a sophomore at UC Merced and she is very interested in Biology. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California in a close-knit household. She wants to participate in research and Engineering Service Learning to help the City of Merced. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family and she values the importance of education. She hopes to participate in leadership and volunteer positions on campus to maintain her diverse background. She chose to join the team because she believes that she can bring her engineering and her professional skills to assist her community.

Rudra Aiyar – Procurement and Finance Officer

Rudra Aiyar is a second year student pursuing a degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in Software Engineering and a minor in Philosophy. She is the PFO for the Engineering Service Learning team, Food Oasis. Rudra has a passion for using technology to improve communities. She plans on using her experience with computers to contribute to the team. She is involved with other clubs on campus such as: Society of Women Engineers, Bobcat Radio, Association of Computing Machinery, Project Q and South Asian Student Association. Aside from academics, she also enjoys playing volleyball, violin, and painting. She has setup her own non-profit art business that she has run for four years.

Haoxian (Andy) Huang – Team Leader

Andy Huang is a first year in the School of Engineering at UC Merced. Huang is a Team Leader of the Engineering Service Team, Food Oasis. He chose this project because it gave him an opportunity to create a sustainable food source for the poor and homeless of Merced while attaining experience in the work environment. In school, Andy has always had an interest in science, specifically modern day technology, and so he hopes to pursue a career in Computer Science. During his spare time, he enjoys socializing with friends and browsing the web in his spare time.

Edgar Garcia – Team Leader

Edgar Garcia is a first-year Mechanical Engineering student. Garcia led his section of 16 flute players, was the designated piccolo player for the band in2014, and assisted in attaining one of the highest scores his school’s marching band (Rancho Verde Crimson Regiment) as ever achieved in SCSBOA Championships 2014. He chose Food Oasis because he is a nutrition enthusiast who believes a quality life is that of a healthy one and everyone should have the opportunity to eat clean and healthy. Garcia enjoys learning and practicing what he learns; whether it be fun little crafts or elementary calculus to aid those who need it.

Noe Ibarra-Perez – Team Member

Noe Ibarra Perez is a first year student with a Mechanical Engineering major. Ibarra-Perez is new to the Engineering Service Learnings Program, in the Food Oasis group. After finding the opportunity to join Engineering Service Learning, he joined the group to get the experience of helping the local community and put into use his building skills. Growing up in diverse environments, Ibarra-Perez has skills in construction, mechanics, and farming. With goals of being an engineer, pilot, and farmer, starting with the Food Oasis group, he expects to learn how to work in an environment similar to those of the job industry.

Kathleen Larson – Team Member

Kathleen Larson is a fourth year Chemical Sciences Student. Larson chose the project Food Oasis after volunteering with the Merced Rescue Mission and realizing the potential to effect change in an organization that serves a widespread community. Larson currently runs Women’s Cross Country at UC Merced, tutors at the UC Merced STEM Center and works as a Lead Resident Assistant on campus. After graduation, Larson intends to pursue a Master’s in Chemistry and obtain the credentials to teach high school. In her off time, Larson enjoys playing soccer, reading books, and learning magic tricks.
