Get S.E.T. Biographies for Spring 2016

Jorge Luna- Project Manager

Jorge Luna is a second year student pursuing his Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Engineering. Jorge is now the Project Manager of the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T. He chose this team because of his passion for teaching and volunteering in the community. Through his college career, he has gained experience with Team Get S.E.T. as a Team Leader, Inventory and Finance Officer, and Assistant Project Manager. Luna is committed to improving science education in the Merced County. During his spare time he enjoys playing soccer with his friends and family. “Soccer #1”

Beatriz Morales P. – Assistant Project Manager

Morales is starting her third year as a transfer student for a degree in Material Science Engineering with an emphasis in nanotechnology. She is from Oxnard, CA. and transferred from Ventura College. She chose Get S.E.T. because she believes that by nurturing and motivating a students, they will be encourage to furthering their educational goals. Morales has volunteer with the Migrant Program for their Jr. High Saturday School, as well as tutoring English Learner students ELs. In addition, she has also volunteer for El Centrito Family Learning Center STEAM Academy, which stands for Science Technology Engineering Art and Math. Personally, she enjoys learning about the Korean culture and language, and spending time with her family.

Karla Serrano– Communications Officer

Karla Serrano is currently a first year majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Serrano is from Los Angeles, California and is a member of the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T. She decided to work with Team Get S.E.T because she loves working with students. Serrano plans to use her experience from the team to help teach students about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She is also interested in working with Engineers Without Borders to help third world countries through engineering projects to meet human needs and to help solve their most pressing challenges. Serrano lived in Russia for ten months and speaks fluent Russian. She also enjoys traveling the world and hopes to one day visit every country.

Ajeé Akintunji – Intellectual Property Officer

Ajeé Akintunji is a second year Bioengineering student and is the Intellectual Property Officer of the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T. She chose this group because she loves working towards things that will positively impact her community in the field of teaching and hands on projects. She has a background working with children; she has been employed and a tutor for various subjects and co-instructed martial and preforming arts for over 3 years. Ajeé looks forward to teaching, spreading knowledge and spreading positivity to the people she comes in contact with. She loves playing sports, dancing, creative writing and mathematics.

Oscar Huang – Procurement and Finance Officer

Oscar Huang is a third year Material Science & Engineering student. Huang is the Procurement and Finance Officer for the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T. He chose team Get S.E.T because he wants to contribute towards STEM education in local schools. Currently, Huang is doing research on campus with Professor Lee on energy storage devices. Huang is interested in going to graduate school after his undergraduate education and eventually into academia with the skills that he will learn from this experience. Huang loves to go out to enjoy nature, but at the same time he also enjoys staying home and playing video games.

 

Kyle Linderbergh – Team Leader

Lindbergh is a first year Mechanical Engineering student. Lindbergh is a team member of the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T. He chose this team because of his interest in designing and building demonstrative science projects. Academically, he is interested in furthering the capability of space travel and the development of spacecraft. He has created a few interactive science museum pieces that demonstrate the possibility and scientific aspects of flight and space travel. He also enjoys spending time reading books about space travel, learning new material and watching the Los Angeles Clippers play in their home town.

 

Josephine Mulherin - Team Leader

Mulherin is a first year Physics student from Victorville, CA. She is the team leader for the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T . Demonstration Sub-Team. She chose this team hoping she could get more people interested in the S.T.E.M. fields. She has previous experience with leadership, event planning, creating a congressional bill, and scientific posters. In high school she was the Vice President of the Wrestling club and she was also in Mock Trial. In addition, she plays video games, reads and watches videos that expands her knowledge in a vast amount of fields, and searches for recipes then cooks all day long.

Meer M. Mohamad – Team Leader

Mohamad is a first year Bioengineering and Material Science and Engineering with a nanotechnology emphasis. Mohamad is the Team Leader of the Get S.E.T High School Sub-Team. Mohamad chose this team because he wanted to expand his knowledge of engineering while helping others. Academically, Mohamad is interested in artificial limbs and organs, organ/tissue repair, robotics, nanotechnology, and things on cellular level. Mohamad has also joined a bioengineering lab and hopes to learn more about tissue and organ repair. His ultimate goal is to be able to create artificial life through his knowledge of bioengineering and other forms of engineering.

Danny Mauricio – Team Member

Mauricio is a second year Undeclared Engineering student, but plans in declaring Mechanical Engineering as his major. He was born in San Jose, California and was raised in Modesto, California. He chose to be part of team Get S.E.T because he believes that helping students in terms of academics within the community of Merced is important. He truly enjoys giving back to his community especially when it has to do with youth and education. Mauricio is a running enthusiast, having participated in two marathons, two half marathons and being part of his high school’s cross country and track team.

Gustavo Razo – Team Member

Gustavo Razo is a second year Applied Mathematics student with an emphasis in Computer Science and Engineering. Coming from the southern Central Valley city of Bakersfield, CA, Razo is currently a member of the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T High School Sub-Team. He chose Team Get S.E.T. after being inspired by his high school math teacher to help young minds pursue an education in STEM. He is also a student with the Natural Sciences Education at UC Merced, studying to become an educator. In addition, Razo enjoys learning French and volunteering with the Half Dome Community Council on campus.

Christian Vernikoff – Team Member

Vernikoff is a first year Computer Science student at UC Merced. Vernikoff is on the High School sub-team for the Engineering Service Learning team, Get S.E.T. He chose this team because it would allow him to work together in a team and help create STEM projects for students in high school. Academically, Vernikoff enjoys all areas of math, but specifically calculus. He loves playing tennis and played on the varsity team in his high school. Outside of academics, he enjoys hiking, fishing and playing Civilization.

Andrea Contreras – Team Member

Andrea Contreras is a third year pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Microbiology and Immunology. Contreras is a member of Get S.E.T. She chose this team because she is interested in aiding students in helping the community. She believes that team Get S.E.T. can help students in the Merced community enhance their learning process and overall benefit their future. Contreras is involved in a club on campus that focuses on community outreach with local elementary students called Science Alliance. She enjoys visiting her family and getting to see her family pets.
