Merit Partners Biographies for Fall 2017

Dana Morales

Project Manager

Dana Morales is a fifth-year student double major pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and a Bachelors of Art in Psychology. Morales is the Project Manager for the Merit Partners Engineering Service Learning team. She chose to lead this project because she is passionate about making a positive impact on the community and aims to gain skills that will benefit her in future endeavors. With her previous experience in Engineering Service Learning, she hopes to lead the Merit Partners Team forward towards completion. Beyond academics, Morales enjoys traveling, playing basketball, and going to concerts. 

 

Bruce Duong

Team Lead

Bruce Duong is currently a second-year majoring in Computer Science and Computer Engineering with research interests in Cognitive and Information Sciences.  Duong is a team leader who plans to make a difference in the lives of youth through his interdisciplinary experience and leadership skills.  Familiar with connecting academic knowledge and the real world, Duong is currently researching on the contemporary perceptions on environmental issues in the Spivey Lab. Team Merit Partners provides him with another opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the community through passion, teamwork, and lots of qualitative analysis.  In his spare time, he enjoys reading literature, tinkering with computers, and exercising.

Emily Mendez

Team Lead

Emily Mendez is a third-year student pursuing her Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Engineering. She is a Team Leader for the Engineering Service Learning team, Merit Partners. Mendez chose the Merit Partners team because she hopes to interact with her community and learn of different ways to be involved, eventually being able to help. Mendez is currently interested in the advancements in Artificial Intelligence and in the future hopes to contribute in that field of study. On her own time, Mendez enjoys cooking with her family and playing video games with her brothers.

Adi Parvatharajan

Communications Officer

Adi Parvatharajan is a second-year Computer Science and Engineering student. He is the Communications Officer for the Engineering Service Learning team, Merit Partners. He chose this position because he believes that everyone deserves a second chance, even incarcerated youth, and this is his way of giving back to the community. With respect to academics, Parvatharajan loves spending his time working on hands-on projects such as spending time with automobiles, as well as programming in the Linux Lab. He is a passionate musician, as he enjoys playing many instruments, and mixes beats in his free time. 

Francisco Mendoza

Intellectual Property Officer

Francisco Mendoza is a fifth year Mechanical Engineering student. Mendoza is the Intellectual Property Officer of the Engineering Service Learning Team Merit Partners. He chooses it because it gave him a diverse opportunity to help determine of this program indeed helps unfortunate incarcerated youth. Academically, Mendoza is interested in AIAA and is working on the jet pulse project at the UC Merced research facility located in the Castle Air Museum. He also enjoys golfing and spending time with his family. As a very determined human being, he will try everything and anything until he succeeds. 

Isidrio Solorio

Procurement and Finance Officer

Isidro Solorio is a fifth-year Mechanical Engineering student. Isidro is the PFO of the Engineering Service Learning Team Merit Partners. He chose it because it is a meaningful program that helps wards of the state get a second chance and assist in integrating them into society. Another reason why was that it was an interesting application of data analysis. Academically, Solorio is interested in heat transfer and finding different methods of cooling in electronic devices. He is part of a research group with Professor Palko in heat transfer working with methods of cooling small electronics. He enjoys playing sports with friends like basketball and soccer.

Jahzel Roman-Torres

Jahzel Roman-Torres is a second-year student who is pursuing her Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. She is a member of the Merit Partners lab, an Engineering Service Learning team. Roman-Torres chose to be a part of this team because of how it positively impacts the community as well as the one on one time with those who are directly impacted. Which, is what she looks forward to doing in the future once graduated. On her free time, she listens to a wide variety of music. Roman-Torres uses her free time to, work on arts and crafts.

Jesus Osuna

Jesus Osuna is a fifth-year student pursuing his bachelors of science in Mechanical Engineering. Osuna is a team member of the Engineering Service Learning Team Merit Partners. He chose it because through this program he will be able to make meaningful contributions towards improving rehabilitation methods among incarcerated youth. Osuna is very interested in working as a mechanical designing engineer after graduation. Through hands-on experience, he hopes to gain valuable skills and knowledge from working on real projects that affect real lives. Osuna enjoys playing sports and watching anime or Netflix on his free time.

Jorge Solorio

Jorge Solorio is Third Year Mechanical Engineer student. Solorio is a member of the Merit Partners lab, an Engineering Service Learning team. He chooses Merit Partners because it gave him a meaningful opportunity to help young adolescents who made a mistake and got incarcerated, but want and deserve a second chance.  Solorio hopes to use his engineering skills to work in a company such as Tesla or other companies making more environmentally friendly technology. Although Solorio is not very good at playing soccer, he enjoys playing with friends on his free time.
