Captivated Thinking Biographies for Fall 2017

Aldo Alvarez

Project Manager

Aldo Alvarez is a second year pursuing his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is the Project Manager for the Engineering Service Learning Team, Captivated Thinking. Alvarez has a strong passion for automotive vehicles and helping others. Alvarez hopes to have a career in the automotive industry after graduation. Alvarez hopes to gain valuable skills, such as time management, throughout this project with hands-on experience as a Project Manager for the team. Alvarez chose this team because he wanted to help a community with the project and bring more businesses in the area.

Jose Arietta

Assistant Project Manager

Jose Luis Arrieta is a third-year Mechanical Engineering student. Arrieta is the Assistant Project Manager of the Engineering Service Learning team, Captivated Thinking. Arrieta comes from Compton, CA, an impoverished neighborhood outside of Los Angeles, CA. Despite the financial limitations, he still managed to excel in engineering competitions throughout high school and college. Through this project, Arrieta hopes to gain information and learn techniques that will transfer into his professional career. Besides the classroom and field work, Arrieta enjoys spending time with friends and family and having fun by finding adventure anywhere he goes.

Jessie Fernandez

Team Lead

Jessie Fernandez is a fifth-year Computer Science and Engineering Major from El Sobrante, California. Fernandez is the team leader of the Engineering Service Learning Team, Captivated Thinking. He chose to be a part of this team because it provides an opportunity to collaborate with students in different fields of engineering. Academically, Fernandez has a passion for programming and continues to learn new technologies to integrate into personal and collaborative projects. In his spare time, he develops websites and web applications for clients. During his time off the computer, he enjoys traveling with family and friends. 

Nayeli Basulto

Communications Officer

Nayeli Basulto is a second year Environmental Engineering major. Basulto is the communications officer of Captivated Thinking. She is from Napa, Ca and hopes to better the environment by improving sustainable energy. She chose the Captivated Thinking team because she has a passion for helping communities grow socially and economically. She would like to help the Tuolumne County Economic Development Authority by bringing in business to create job opportunities for the Tuolumne residents. Basulto is a PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Support) tutor for chemistry and loves to help students feel comfortable with the course material. On her free time, she enjoys playing soccer and taking walks. 

Celine Shenny

Intellectual Property Officer

Celine Shenny is a second-year student pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering. Shenny is the Intellectual Property Officer of Captivated Thinking. She chose this team because she is passionate about positively impacting a community by using her CS skills to help design a software to create an economic snapshot. This product will save time and money for the Tuolumne County Economic Development Authority. Shenny is from Danville, CA. She is part of the Community Council, which holds events for the residents in her housing community at the University. She enjoys hiking and exploring new cities. 

Josephine Mulherin

Procurement and Finance Officer

Josephine Mulherin is a third-year Physics student from Victorville, CA. Mulherin is now the Procurement and Finance Officer of the Engineering Service Learning team, Captivated Thinking. She chose this team hoping she could save time and money for the Tuolumne County Economic Development Authority. She has previous experience in leadership, event planning, creating a congressional bill, and scientific posters. In high school, she was the Vice President of the Wrestling club and she was also in Mock Trial. In addition, she does volunteer work, reads, and watches videos to expand her knowledge in a vast number of fields. 

Danny Mauricio

Danny Mauricio is a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student. He is a team member of Engineering Service Learning team, Captivated Thinking. Mauricio had decided to join Captivated Thinking because he believes there is an ethical issue with a rural county needing to rely on incarcerated individuals to drive their economy, meaning that there is a cycle of having to continuously place individuals in detention centers. Aside from being part of the team, Mauricio enjoys helping out in his community and spending time with his family.

 

Marquise Fleming

Team Lead

Marquise Fleming is a first year Computer Science Major. Fleming is a Team Leader of the Engineering Service Learning Team Captivated Thinking. He chose this team because it gave him a chance to work with those who might be "bad people." He also appreciates academics and education, seeing as he graduated high school with honors and finished in the top 12% of his class. He also enjoys spending time with friends, playing video games and reading novels.  

Miguel Ruiz

Miguel Ruiz is a first year Undeclared Engineering student at UC Merced. Ruiz is a member of the Captivated Thinking Team. As a first-year student at UC Merced, Ruiz decided that it was best to only contribute as a member since it would allow him to become familiar with the course and the material which is essential to take larger roles soon. Ruiz comes from Los Angeles, and has no previous experience which is the reason as to why he joined the Captivated Thinking Team. In addition, Ruiz is very passionate about soccer and frequently watches to remain updated with his favorite team, Real Madrid.
