Project Protect Biographies for Fall 2015

Jaskanwaljeet Kaur - Project Manager

Jaskanwaljeet Kaur is a molecular and cell biology student. She chose this project because it gave her an opportunity to work with the community as a whole, where the Goal is to promote health by being healthy and making smart choices in regards to an individuals' health and well-being. Other than that, Jas is interested in a potential medical career after graduating from UCM and this class gave her an opportunity to better enhance her experience as a student leader along with helping individuals understand the benefits of being healthier.

Brenda Yu - Assistant Project Manager

Brenda Yu is a first year student double majoring in Biological Sciences (Human Biology) and Psychology, and the Assistant Project Manager for Project Protect. Joining Project Protect gave her the opportunity to combine her interests in medicine with her desire to educate the community on major health issues. Currently, she is the chairperson of a local non-profit organization called Distinguished Young Women of Merced, which she founded in August 2014. She is also a member of the Campus Activities Board at UC Merced. When she is not busy with academics or community service, Brenda enjoys broadening her knowledge about the Marvel Universe.

Myvi Nguyen - Inventory and Procurement Officer

Myvi is a fourth year Earth Systems Science major at the University of California, Merced. She is currently involved in different organizations such as being Vice-President for the Omega Leo Club, member of Naturalist Training, and Hmong Student Association (HSA). In the past, she was part of two other Engineering Service Learning teams, specifically the Vernal Pool Team and San Joaquin River. She had phenomenal experiences with the previous teams and wishes to continue her experience with Service Learning in order to gain knowledge, leadership, cooperation, and communication skills in order to prepare her for future careers. 

Judith Mendoza - Communications Officer

Judith Mendoza is a first year Biomedical Engineering student. Judith is the communications officer of the Engineering Service Learning team, Project Protect. She chose this project because the possibility of a discovery that can positively impact the community was intriguing to her, she believes the project will challenge her intellectually. Judith was ASB President at her high school and she hopes to apply the leadership skills she learned in this college setting. She enjoys reading random articles, longboarding, and being outdoors.

Nancy Arreola - Intellectual Property Officer

Nancy Arreola is a first year Biological Engineering student. Nancy Arreola is the IPO of the Engineering Service Learning team Project Protect. She chose this team because she wanted to help impact the community in a positive way as well as to help create an innovative method to help people gain knowledge towards antibiotics. Academically, Nancy has volunteered in Hospice Center. She enjoys anything related to music as well as reading non-fictional books and learning new languages. Although Nancy is a first year student, she has made time to help tutor peers in writing, pre-calculus, and chemistry.

Edward Kim - WebMaster

Edward Kim is a third year majoring in Computer Science and Engineering. Edward Is the WebMaster for Project Protect of the Engineering Service Learning Team. While attending a community college, Edward has earned certificates in Advanced C++ Programming and Computer Architecture. He chose this project because of his strong belief in the importance of efficiency off antibiotics in addition to his interest in biology and use of computer and engineering involved in the subject. As for hobbies, Edward likes to spend his time out in nature, and two of his favorite outdoor activities are hiking and camping. 

Christina Blaul - Team Leader

Christina is a freshman and a prospective Bioengineer. She chose this particular service learning because it fulfills a health need in her surrounding community. She plans to find solutions to these dire medical issues with other problems solvers on her Service Learning her team. As a surfer and swimmer, she takes interest in underwater submarines. In addition, Christina's volunteer work at the Emergency Room exposed her to the medical devices used by healthcare professionals. She loves creating multi-level video games that are imaginative in design.
