Project Protect Biographies for Fall 2017

 

Leo Alonso Cabrera

Project Manager

Leo Alonso Cabrera is a fourth-year Computer Science and Engineering Major with a Minor in Management and Business Economics. He has been managing the Project Protect team for four semesters now, using it as an opportunity to help students in learning how to work in a collaborative environment, as well as furthering his skills as a software engineer. Academically, his interest lies in being able to further understand the role in data in a quantitative fashion, allowing it to become a powerful source of information that can lead to the development of safer communities and improvement of criminal justice functions. 

Eshita Nandini

Assistant Project Manager

Eshita Nandini is a fourth-year Applied Mathematics student. Nandini serves as the Assistant Project Manager of Project Protect. She chose this team because she believes that technology has the potential to solve a lot of social problems; in this case, bridging the gap between medical professionals and the average person. She is serving as the Undergraduate Social Coordinator for the Society of Industrial & Applied Mathematics and is a part of Kappa Kappa Gamma. On her spare time, Nandini likes to travel, spend time with animals, or go on adventures with her friends and family. 

Danny Her

Team Lead

Danny Her is a second-year Computer Science and Engineering major. He is a member of the Engineering Service Learning team, Project Protect.  Her chose the team because of his interest in both developing applications as well as interacting with the diverse ethnic cultures within Merced.  He has a passion to assist and help the Merced community because it is his hometown; during his spare time, he volunteers alongside non-profit organizations such as the Merced Breakfast Lion’s Club and El Capitan Leo Club.  Her enjoys playing basketball and learning about the Hmong culture during his free time.

Joseph Lim

Team Lead

Joseph Lim is a second-year student and is majoring in Computer Science. Lim came from a private high school where he was taught the themes of leadership skills he would use later throughout his life. Lim has reached out to the community directly and indirectly throughout high school, demonstrating his humble character. He has strong faith towards his religion which has helped him overcome the toughest moments of his life.  Lim joined Project Protect to incorporate the skills he learned to a larger community, and address an issue within it to strengthen his characteristics and test his abilities to work. 

 

Priscilla Cuevas

Communications Officer

Priscilla Cuevas is a fifth-year, finishing her degree in Developmental Biology. This is Cuevas’s second time working in an Engineering Service Learning team, she says the experience of taking the class is unique in her education. Her favorite part about this course is how they collaborate with a faculty advisor who is invested in the project.  Cuevas is interested in the epidemic of antibiotic resistance and the project is she is working on with her team is finding a way to help people become educated about the epidemic. Cuevas plans to become a nurse practitioner, so this project will help her become more acquainted with helping others become health aware.

Angelica Pineda

Intellectual Property Officer

Angelica Pineda is a third-year student pursuing her Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Pineda is a team member for the Engineering Service Learning team Project Protect. She chose to be a part of this project because she has a passion for helping people in need. Pineda plans to attend graduate school where she will pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. Pineda is a member of the Society of Women in Engineering (SWE) and Women in STEM, in which she gains valuable skills to succeed in the engineering industry. During her free time, Pineda enjoys hanging out with friends and watching her favorite TV shows.

Jeanette De Loa

Procurement and Finance Officer

Jeanette de Loa is a fifth-year Microbiology and Immunology major with a Public Health Minor. She chose the project because it gave her the opportunity to help a community that needs assistance when it comes to understanding information on antibiotics. Through project engagement, she hopes that the team will prepare her for the world of medicine and community involvement, as well as give her the opportunity to aid the underserved communities. Her future goals are to become a Health Attorney to help individuals with health care issues as well as work with health care regulations and statutes.  

Michael Issa

Michael Issa is a second-year Computer Science and Engineering student. Issa is a passionate team member of the Engineering Service Learning team Project Protect app team. He proudly picked this project, because it gave him the opportunity to aid the elderly and make life easier. Currently, he is working on an app to make communication more accessible throughout the campus. Academically, Issa is interested in coding and using his codes to help the campus function more thoroughly. In his spare time, you can find Issa playing soccer or hanging out with his family and friends.

Michael Andemeskel

Michael T. Andemeskel is a senior Computer Science major on the App team. He has designed, implemented, and launched multiple Android apps. He brings Android expertise and general software engineering knowledge to the team. He chose this course because he enjoys building tools that help people. Outside of class, his interests center around entrepreneurship. He is a part of two different startups and one joint venture, tackling diverse problems from baby translation to crop yield prediction. He has also delved into poetry and windsurfing - his favorite poems being Stevenson's 'Summer Sun' and Hopkins' 'The Windhover'.

Saigeetha Bhaskar

Saigeetha Bhaskar is a first year undergraduate Bioengineering student. Bhaskar is a team member in the Engineering Service Learning: Project Protect. She chose Project Protect because it gave her the opportunity to help people receive the healthcare they deserve. Previously, Bhaskar was an aerospace Boeing intern in 2016 and was president of her high school’s FRC (First Robotics Competition) team in 2017. However, she found her passion for merging engineering with medicine and eventually hopes to contribute to the future technological advancement in the field of medicine. Apart from her academics, Bhaskar enjoys travelling, spending time with family, transposing music, and dance.
