Sustainable Sites Biographies for Spring 2018

   

Brian Hungerman - Project Manager

Brian Hungerman is a second-year Computer Science and Engineering student and is currently the Project Manager for Engineering Service Learning’s Sustainable Sites team. He believes his successful experience at local Hackathons and CITRIS’ Mobile App Challenge allows him to thrive in this role. He is heavily vested in campus organizations, including being the web developer for the Center for Information Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), Community Outreach Officer for the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), and CSE Ambassador for the Center for Career & Professional Advancement (CCPA). In his free time, he enjoys pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities at the UC Merced Venture Lab.

Brenda Yu – Assistant Project Manager

Brenda Yu is the Assistant Project Manager for the Sustainable Sites Engineering Service Learning Team. She is a third-year Human Biology and Psychology student with a minor in Chemistry. Yu plans to contribute her background in data analytics and marketing to promote sustainability efforts through technology. As an intern in the Office of Student Life, CITRIS, and the Joint Genome Institute, Yu is passionate about combining informatics with graphic design to creatively present usable data. Currently, she is building her own technology company centered on food informatics while pursuing a career as a medical scientist.

Chanh Nguyen – Intellectual Property Officer

Chanh Nguyen is a third-year Human Biology major and the intellectual property officer of Sustainable Sites’ Engineering Service Learning Team. Being part of Project Ozone provides him an opportunity to participate in a project that will allow him to establish ease of information between the Department of Sustainability and the students of UC Merced. Academically, Nguyen is interested in nanoparticle toxicity and working in the Chin lab at UC Merced. Nguyen hopes to contribute to the field of research regarding nanoparticle toxicity.  Nguyen hopes to use this skill set to establish FDA regulated procedures that are geared toward the usage of nanoparticles in everyday use.

Robert Manuel Jr – Procurement and Finance Officer

Robert Manuel Jr. is a fifth-year Environmental Engineering student and the Procurement and Finance Officer of the Sustainable Sites Engineering Service Learning Team. He is excited to learn new skills on a project outside the curriculum of environmental engineering. With a limited background on coding, Robert is focused to help produce an application that proudly encompasses sustainability efforts at UC Merced. Beyond college, he intends to work on water or wastewater management to improve both the public and the environment.

Andres Reyes - Engineering Team Lead

Mr. Reyes is a Computer Science Major and Applied Math minor interested in big data applications of interdisciplinary topics. Mr.Reyes has taken courses focused on C based programming languages. These courses allowed him to gain many hours of experience in solving problems using object-oriented programming in C++. His minor in applied math allowed him to take courses in Statistics and applied mathematics to gather an intuitive understanding of problems from a mathematical standpoint. He hopes to apply this skillset and experience to create more awareness of sustainability at the University of California, Merced.

ANTHONY YANG- Team Member

Anthony Yang is a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student focusing on mechanical aerospace production. Yang has designed a haptic cutting template for Advance Vision Science Inc.  Yang is a member of the Ozone team, which is in charge of the Department of Sustainability app. By joining the Ozone team, Yang hopes to improve his skills in computer software and to improve his knowledge of completing tasks and timelines for his customers. Yang plans on joining the aerospace industry to create efficient designs and maximize development time.

Maria Catherine Villarosa – TEAM MEMBER

Maria Catherine Villarosa is a third-year Environmental Engineering student. Villarosa is from Gardena, CA, and graduated from North Torrance High School in 2015. She was involved in clubs such as California Scholarship Federation (CSF), Filipino Club, and was president of her school’s Ecology Club. In high school, taking AP Environmental Science is what fueled her interest in environmental engineering, and she wants to focus and learn more about sustainability and renewable energy as she continues her studies. In her spare time, Maria Catherine likes to watch Korean dramas, penny board, and play Overwatch. She also hopes to own a Shiba Inu one day.

Gordon Ng – Team Member

Gordon Ng is a third-year student pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering. Ng is a team member of the Sustainable Sites where he is developing an accessible, user-friendly application that promotes awareness of the initiatives to campus visitors, students, and other personnel affiliated with the university. As a student that is interested in environmental engineering, he worked on the solar distillation project and the aquaponics project to familiarize himself with the field. Ng is interested in using this experience to develop his skills and resume.  

Adrian Loredo - Team Member

Adrian Loredo is a second-year Environmental Engineering student. Loredo is a member of the Sustainable Sites team. Loredo plans to use his experience on the Sustainable Sites team to research, collect data, and learn more about how communities are involved in eco-friendly sites. As a member of the off-campus community, Loredo spends his time volunteering around the community in hopes to achieve a cleaner and more eco-friendly community. While also raising awareness on how to positively contribute to this global issue. Loredo is interested in giving students and staff interested in campus sustainability the information and technology available to become a better and more sustainable campus community.

Akeiylah DeWitt – Team Member

Akeiylah DeWitt is a second-year Cognitive Science undergraduate and a member of the Sustainability Sites (Ozone) Engineering Service Learning Team. Her niche lies within user-experience (UX), where product design begins with the user in mind. As (UX) researcher on the team, DeWitt evaluates the usability of sustainability-based campus resources. Academically, DeWitt currently researches fractal patterns within coordination between video and audio data of musical performances, working in the Cognitive Mechanics research lab at UC Merced. DeWitt hopes to establish her own UX consulting firm and provide growing business with quality user-based solutions.


 

Adrian Darian – Team Member

Adrian Darian is a second-year Computer Science and Engineering student and currently a team member on the Sustainable Sites Engineering Service Learning Team. Darian’s participation on this team allows him to help current, past, and all newcomers to UC Merced’s campus who have questions regarding the placement of trash sites, water fountains, bike racks, bathrooms, classroom versus offices, and facility buildings. All the while he has a great interest in school and his academics, but he much prefers to be out there and working on multiple projects. In the future, he plans to work on several projects simultaneously at a big company.

Kening Cai – Team Member

Kening Cai is a fifth-year Environmental Engineering student with an emphasis on water quality. Cai is a member of the Engineering Service Learning Sustainable Sites project, he is working on the back end of the interactive web page. By working on the Sustainable Sites project at UC Merced, Cai hopes to gain valuable skills and experience that will help him in his future career as an Environmental Engineer. After graduation Cai plans to get licensed and work as an environmental engineer with an emphasis on water quality and water treatment.
